چکیده

Dicyphus hesperus Knight has good potential as a biological control agent for greenhouse pests in greenhouse tomato crops. The spatial distribution of D. hesperus was studied and a sampling plan was developed to monitor this species in greenhouse-grown tomatoes. Adults and nymphs are distributed in a more aggregated pattern among plants than within plants. The strong, signiÞcant relationship between the mean population density and the proportion of occupied sample units (leaves or plants) makes it possible to use a binomial or presence-absence sampling approach. Presence-absence sampling is an efÞcient method for crop management purposes because less time is needed to process the samples compared with a method where all insects are counted. At high densities, considering a sample unit to be occupied only when there are more than a determined number of individuals reduces considerably the optimum sample size required.

State-dependent sampling bias in insects: implications for monitoring western tarnished plant bugs

Insect populations vary in the proportion of individuals exhibiting a particular ‘state’ (e.g., developmental stage, sex, egg load, or nutritional status). Because an insect’s developmental state often determines both its size and its behavior, it is likely that this will also affect the probability of being sampled. We propose that a comprehensive approach to pest management must consider the ...

Stage-specific predation on Lygus hesperus affects its population stage structure

Evidence suggests that prey can vary in their susceptibility to predation depending on their developmental stage. Stage-dependent predation is of particular importance to integrated pest management, because it is often a particular developmental stage of a pest that causes the majority of the damage to the crop. An understanding of stage-dependent biocontrol is therefore important for predictin...

Quantifying trade-os between pest sampling time and precision in commercial IPM sampling programs

A key component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in agricultural systems is ®eld monitoring for pests prior to reaching a management decision. The study objective was to quantify a common design constraint of commercial IPM sampling programs: the trade-o€ between sampling time and accuracy of the resulting pest management decision. Using consperse stink bug (Euschistus conspersus Uhler) in p...

The influence, if any, of 5m wide, feral, herbaceous field borders on pest and beneficial arthropods in commercial cotton, Gossypium hirsutum (L.) (Malvales: Malvaceae), fields was measured through a variety of sampling techniques over three years. In each year, 5 fields with managed, feral vegetation borders and five fields without such borders were examined. Sampling was stratified from the f...

Spatial dispersion and binomial sequential sampling for the potato psyllid (Hemiptera: Triozidae) on potato.

BACKGROUND The potato psyllid is a serious pest of potatoes. Sampling plans on potatoes for the potato psyllid have yet to be developed, thus the authors' objectives were (1) to determine the most efficient within-plant sampling unit, (2) to determine the spatial dispersion of potato psyllids in potato fields and (3) to develop a binomial sequential sampling plan for this pest. RESULTS Signif...
